Can You Install a Split System on an Internal Wall?
There are many cases in an apartment where the room that you want to air condition is not directly located next to the balcony. This causes an issue as the outdoor unit of the AC is usually mounted onto the balcony due to convenience, cost and complying with body corporate rules.
In this installation example the bedroom that the client wanted to heat and cool was located on the other side of the apartment with a bathroom and another bedroom between it and the balcony.
The only way to run the piping and the electrical cables is to run them up into the roof. There are also drainage issues which we will get to. Plaster needs to be cut in the roof to be able to feed the pipes from the indoor unit over to the balcony. The cuts as shown in the photos are approximately 300mm square allowing access to see inside thew roof space and run the pipes in the best and most direct path.
The plaster is then cut down the wall inside the apartment because the body corporate rules did not allow any external duct work to be mounted to the exterior of the building. The hole drilled through the concrete at a low level next to the window frame allowed the pipes to be brought onto the balcony and not on the other side of the balcony rails keeping all work invisible from the outside of the building.
The drainage from the indoor unit required a condensation pump which was located inside the cupboard behind the indoor ac unit. A good solution meaning the pump was not visible insane the bedroom and also helping to muffle and boxing noise from the pump when it is required to empty the water from the tray.
