In a lot of apartment buildings it is a body corporate requirement to install the out door unit of a split system (the compressor) on the blind side of the building. Installing them at the front can be a problem due to aesthetic concerns from neighbours and also noise concerns.
This apartment had the good fortune of being on the ground floor which had access underneath it due to the fact it was in the process of being renovated during installation.
The client wanted the indoor unit in the living area which only had an external wall that faced the front of the building. Body corporate had already made it clear that under no circumstances was there to be an ac unit located on the garden at the front. They did however allow ducting to be run on the wall if the out door unit could be located on the other side of the building.
This is quite common as in a lot of these older style 60-70’s style buildings the utilities are all on the blind side along with gas supplies, hot water services and clothes lines.
The piping was take out to the front, run down to a level that allowed us to drill underneath the apartment and run the piping across to the back of the building. The drain was able to be drained straight out into the garden bed below. Due to the renovations there was a manhole to allow access underneath.
The outdoor unit was mounted to the brick walls at a height that allowed the drainage to be rerouted across to a storm water drain approximately 4 meters away.
